FIFA World Cup 2026 Substitution Rules: How Many Player Changes Are Allowed

The FIFA World Cup 2026 will maintain the current substitution rules that allow teams to make up to five player substitutions during regular play, plus an additional substitution if the match goes to extra time. Teams have three opportunities during the match to make these changes, not counting halftime. This rule was permanently adopted by FIFA after being temporarily introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic to help manage player workload and reduce injury risk. The expanded substitution allowance provides coaches with greater tactical flexibility and helps maintain player fitness throughout the tournament’s demanding schedule.
